Culture

The culture of Jordan is based on Arab and Islamic elements with significant Western influence. Notable aspects of the culture include the music of Jordan as well as an interest in sports, particularly football and basketball as well as other imported sports mainly from the west and other elements.

Museum

Jordan Archaeological Museum:

Excellent collection of the antiquities of Jordan dating from prehistoric times to the 15th century. Citadel Hill, Amman. Hours: 9:00 to 5:00 daily except Tuesday; Fridays and official holidays 10 to 4 Telephone: 4638795. Free entry.

Jordan Museum of Popular Traditions:

Jordanian Costumes and jewelry, Many over 100 Years old. Also mosaics from Jerash and Madaba. The Roman Amphitheater, Amman Hours: 9:00 to 5:00 daily. Telephone: 4651760. Entry fees: 1 JD for other nationalities.
 

Jordan Folklore Museum:

Various artifacts of traditional Jordanian life, including costumes, home furnishings, musical instruments and handicrafts dating back to the 19th century. The Roman Amphitheater, Amman. Hours: 9:00 to 5:00 daily except Tuesday. Telephone: 4651742. Entry fees: 1 JD for other nationalities.
 

Martyr's Memorial:

Chronological display of military memorabilia dating from the Arab Revolt of 1916 to the present, housed in a monumental building. Sports City, Amman. Hours: 9:00 to 4:00 daily except Saturday. Telephone: 5664240. Free entry.
 

Jordan National Gallery:

Fine collection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics by contemporary Jordanian artists, as well as work by artists of other Muslim countries. Muntazah, Jabal Laweibdeh. Hours 10:00 to 1:30 and 3:00 to 6:00 daily except Tuesday. Telephone: 4630128. Entry fees: 1 JD for other nationalities.
